Specialist in Small Animal Surgery

BSc, BVMS, MANZCVS (Small Animal Surgery), MRCVS, Diplomate ACVS-SA
HK & Australian registered & American recognized Small Animal Surgery Specialist

Dr. Jonathan Speelman graduated in Veterinary Studies from Murdoch University in Western Australia in 1988. He has previously worked in Australia and the United Kingdom.  Dr. Speelman arrived in Hong Kong in 2000 from Melbourne, Australia and has worked continuously at CityU VMC and Peace Avenue Veterinary Clinic since that time.  He passed postgraduate membership examinations in Small Animal Surgery through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 1998.

In 2011, Dr. Speelman commenced a 3-year surgery residency training program, under an ACVS Diplomate.  This training was an intensive training programme involving exposure to all aspects of specialist surgical practice.  Externships were completed at various specialist referral surgical practices and  University teaching hospitals  in the U.S.A.(including U.C.Davis), and Australia.  The residency also involved independent research and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.  He is an active journal reviewer for publications relating to research in surgery.

Following credentialing with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, in February 2016, Dr. Speelman successfully completed certification examinations with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, passing on his first attempt.  He is now a board certified Specialist surgeon.

Dr. Speelman receives referrals for orthopaedic, oncologic, soft tissue and neurosurgery cases, from within the practice and from practicing general practitioner veterinarians throughout Hong Kong.  He regularly attends international conferences and continuing education events, and keeps in close contact with overseas specialists, to keep up to date with the best and most current practices for management of his patient’s problems. Dr. Speelman regulary lectures to international veterinary audiences in the region to help other vets remain current in their surgical practice.

Dr. Speelman lives in the New Territories with his family of two children, a local dog and cat.  Dr. Speelman is a very keen cyclist, and regularly rides the trails and roads of Hong Kong to keep fit.  Dr. Speelman has travelled extensively throughout the world, and finds living and working in busy Hong Kong a stimulating way of life, with close access to the vibrant surrounding areas of Southeast Asia.  Dr. Speelman also enjoys playing and listening to music, including piano and didgeridoo, and the challenge of learning to understand and speak Cantonese.

Dr. Speelman was in the role of Chief Veterinary Medical Officer from 2016-2019, and during this time helped to design the new centre and transition to the new building which the CityU VMC now occupies.  The experience has helped him to understand the importance of having a great team of specialists working together to help solve the problems that modern state-of-the art veterinary practice is presented with.
